In designing for a couple, HMP and designer Cait Cisek wanted to investigate identity in partnerhood. Identity is a personal thing, but we almost universally experience it with others around us– people who see us, reflect us and influence us. This design process touched on global movement that spans India, Singapore and The United States, but as a couple Brinda and Adit were much more interested in discussing their future than their past. Their partnership values their shared goals, aspirations and ambitions and they challenged the design process to visualize and lionize that. Both actors and performers who recently relocated to Los Angeles, Brinda and Adit challenged the design to look into the future through the nostalgia of the Golden Age of Hollywood. We envisioned the night of their Hollywood premiere, a remake of the 1934 classic The Thin Man. The design palette was largely inspired by the iconic Academy Award statue, but elements of the past are speckled throughout the design: the portrait of Maharaja Sir Yadavindra Singh from 1938 inspired the chains draped across Adit’s back and Jhumka were the inspiration in the dangling elements featured in Brinda’s skirt.
